課程概述 |
In terms of reading, the course is designed to introduce freshmen to a variety of writing styles in English, ranging from the journalistic to the literary. The first semester focuses on a selection of writings from the major American and British newspapers and periodicals, and the second focuses on literary genres such as essay, poetry, fiction, and drama. As for writing, three writing exercises are required each semester, which will be graded for further discussion and revision. Regarding oral and listening training, regular drills (such as daily conversations) will be conducted in class, assigned topics (such as joke-telling, show and tell) presented, and regular films screened and discussed in class. The course places particular emphasis on correct pronunciation and distinct enunciation through constant drills and presentations. Another feature would be a general survey of the history of pop music in English from the blues, jazz to the folk rock and contemporary songs, which will be introduced in two installments at the end of each semester. |
